Dr. Jerry A. Young is Professor Emeritus of Tuba and Euphonium and was a member of the music faculty at UW-Eau Claire from 1983 to 2011 and continued to teach as a member of the Academic Staff through the spring of 2016. In addition to teaching applied tuba and euphonium, he directed the BASSically BRASS euphonium/tuba ensemble and taught a colloquium in the university honors program called “Songs and Symphonies,” as well as serving as a member of the University’s outstanding music education faculty, supervising student teachers and teaching advanced music education methods courses. Young served on the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp from 1983 to 1993 where he founded the Interlochen Tubafest and performed regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. His prior educational experience included an appointment as Assistant Professor of Music at Central Missouri State University, a teaching assistantship at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, and as band director in the public schools of Hackett, Arkansas and Fayetteville, Arkansas. His former students enjoy successful careers as music educators, in music industry, and in leading orchestras and military bands in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, as well as in diverse non-music related fields ranging from law enforcement to technology-related fields.
Young retired from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in 2016 and has lived in Leelanau County, Michigan with his wife, pianist Dr. Barbara Young, since 2017. He currently performs with the Northern Lower Brass Quartet, Rags to Riches Ragtime Quartet, and Encore Winds.
