Robert Benton is a distinct sound among the newest generation of euphonium performers. Upon graduating high school in Port Aransas, Texas, Robert joined the United States Army as a soldier-musician with the 82nd Airborne Division Band at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. After his tour of duty was completed, he began the study of music at Western Carolina University, transferring to Oakland University in Michigan where he studied with Dr. Kenneth Kroesche. Graduating magna cum laude from Oakland in 2007, Robert entered Professor Phil Sinder’s studio at Michigan State University, where he continued to hone his skills as a euphoniumist. While at MSU he also developed his abilities as a tubist, graduating magna cum laude in 2009 with a Low Brass Specialist degree. He is currently a student at the University of Michigan, pursing a Doctor of Music degree.

Robert has won several concerto competitions at both Oakland University and Michigan State. In 2005, he was the first music student to receive the Daimler-Chrysler Undergraduate Research Grant which helped him prepare and participate in the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference Solo Competition. In 2006, Robert applied for and was awarded the Stanley Hollingsworth Overseas Summer Study Grant, which sent him to Manchester, England to study with renowned euphonium legend Steven Mead. Most recently, he travelled to South Korea and competed in the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival Brass Competition, where he was a finalist.

As a teacher, he currently teaches tuba and euphonium at the University of Windsor in Ontario. He has also taught at Oakland University, as well as maintaining a strong private studio of local middle and high school students. Robert’s plans for the future are to promote the euphonium as a solo instrument not only through concerts, competitions, and recitals, but by training the next generation of euphoniumists as a teacher at the University level.
